#2 Haftarah: Isaiah 54:1-55:5

Hi, here's a fun song from Isaiah 54, called "Sing O Barren Woman." It came to me from the Lord, as I was reading Bible Portion #2, in a Calypso beat (perfect for those of you in Trinidad and Tobago!). Click below to hear the song.

In my own life, it has been very enlightening to read the first five books of the Bible, called the Torah, plus related Old Testament scriptures. It's been even more enlightening to read the hundreds of New Testament scriptures that also relate.

Here's a simple chart of each Torah portion in Genesis. There are twelve in all. If you'd like to join with us, we are reading #3 today, Lekh Lekha, starting at Genesis 12:1

Jews have been reading this cycle for almost 2,500 years, usually reading one portion each week on the Shabbat. Messianic believers have added appropriate New Testament.

Here is a chart showing the Old Testament portions PLUS many New Testament passages.

54 Bible portions

For many years we have been reading the 54 Torah portions, one portion each day, which enables us to read through the Torah once every 54 days. It's been a tremendous blessing in our lives!

We highly recommend reading the Torah like this, one portion each day, plus all the related scripture portions in the Haftarah (prophets) and Brit Chadasha (New Covenant). It's amazing how God "writes" the Torah into our hearts, and confirms our faith in His commandments. And we see Yeshua on every page!

Today is Shevat 3 on the Jewish calendar, January 9, 2019. So we are reading Torah portion #3, "Lekh Lekha" (which means, "Get yourself out"), the story of how God called Abraham out from Ur of the Chaldees into the Promised Land. The Haftarah and Brit Chadashah portions all relate clearly.

Shalom!

Dr. Steve Kuban

About "Sing O Barren Woman" song:

How this song came about

In Torah portion #2 (Gen 6:9-11:32) we read how YHVH judged the earth with a massive flood, but He saved Noah and his family in the Ark. Then He promised He would never again destroy the earth with a flood.

The related Haftarah portion in Isaiah 54 begins with YHVH telling Israel: "Sing O Barren Woman."

The moment I read those four words, a happy melody and calypso beat suddenly popped into my mind, and joy rose up in my heart. "Could it be that YHVH is giving me a brand new song?" I thought to myself.

Putting this chapter into context, Isaiah 54 is actually a reassuring song YHVH is telling Israel to sing. He tells Israel that though she is like a young wife whom He has forsaken (due to her sin and unfaithfulness to Him), His anger against her was only going to be for a 'small moment' of time. In due time He would restore her to Himself. Thus He tells her:

"Sing O barren woman, break forth into song.
Enlarge thy dwelling places, lengthen thy cords
Break forth on the right hand (into dancing)
And break forth on the left
The nations are your inheritance!"

As I read those words, they continued to flow perfectly with the melody and calypso beat I was hearing in my head, which is usually a confirmation that what I'm hearing in my head musically is coming from the Holy Spirit.

As I read the whole chapter the words continued to fit into that same melody and joyful calypso beat. This was another confirmation.

Then YHVH gave me a third confirmation. As I read Isaiah 54 using a Hebrew Bible, I saw that the Hebrew word used for a "small moment" is rega katon. Suddenly I knew God was giving me this song for Isaiah 54, and it was to be sung and performed with a calypso beat.

When I saw the word rega katon, I immediately thought of reggaeton, a style of music used in the Caribbean. This was the third confirmation, so now I knew that YHVH wanted me to create the song, "Sing O Barren Woman" using a calypso beat. And the nice thing was, He'd already given me the melody, beat, and key in my head, so the most important work was already done, by Him. Isn't God great? This is typical of how He inspires and speaks to me. :-) Now, the rest of the song I would have to work hard to pull together.

So I spent the next hour researching and selecting verses from the King James Bible and the Orthodox Jewish Bible (OJB), using YHVH's Hebrew name whenever possible (as I desire to restore His divine name through all my songs and teaching). This includes YHVH T'seva'ot ("the LORD of Hosts" in the KJV or "Hashem Tzva'os" in the OJB). I also used "Elohim (God) of the whole earth", and "Your Go'el" (Redeemer). I found the Orthodox Jewish Bible was quite helpful. For example here is Isaiah 54:7,8 in the OJB:

For a rega katon (small moment) have I abandoned thee; but with rachamim gedolim will I gather thee back. 8 With a little wrath I hid My face from thee for a rega (moment); but with chesed olam will I have rachamim on thee, saith thy Go'el, Hashem

May this song be a blessing to you. May this help you to memorize and internalize God's Word!

Daily Devotions: Parashah #2: Noah, Sing O Barren Woman

Today as I was reading Torah portion #2 about Noah's Ark, I saw how the Lord (after saving the remnant of Noah and his family) promised He would never again destroy the earth with a flood.

I then turned to the corresponding Haftarah portion in Isaiah 54.
Immediately upon reading the first four words: "Sing O Barren Woman"
I heard a very happy calypso melody in my mind, and felt great joy in my heart.

Isaiah 54 is a wonderful song, where YHVH tells Israel that though she is like a young wife forsaken, it's only for a small moment that YHVH has forsaken her. He then says,

"Sing O Barren Woman, break forth into song."

I heard a joyful calypso come into my mind! And then — get this:
As I read from the Hebrew Bible I discovered that the Hebrew word used for a "small moment" is "rega katon"
That was the perfect confirmation that YHVH wanted me to use a calypso style for this song!
Because a certain style of music used in the Caribbean is called "reggaeton"

Daily Devotions: A new 30/60 day Bible reading cycle begins today! 1 Shevat (Jan 7, 2019) — Please join us as we read! (includes Scripture songs)

Today we are beginning a new monthly cycle of Bible reading. Would you like to join us for the next 30 or 60 days? You'll be very blessed!

It's good to read through the Bible systematically. We use two Bible reading plans: a 30-day plan and a 60 day plan.

The 30-day plan is for reading the Psalms, Proverbs, Acts and Revelation through each month

The 60-day plan is for reading the Torah through in two months. (Torah or Pentateuch refers to the first five books of the Bible written by Moses)

There are many other Bible reading plans: for a week, a month, or a year, or for reading through a particular Book of the Bible in a certain amount of time. Bible.com has some excellent plans. For example you can read through A Harmony of the Gospels in 30 days.

►30-day plan:

Each day we read:

Five Psalms

One Proverbs

One chapter in Acts

One chapter in Revelation

By reading Psalms through each month, we are filled with songs of praise. Many songs have come to me over the past 30 years as I've read five Psalms each day of the month!

By reading Proverbs each day, we are filled with the wisdom of God!

By reading Acts, we come to understand how Yeshua fulfilled the Torah and Old Testament scriptures, the power of His Name, and the power of the Holy Spirit working in believers. We see the life of Paul up-close and personal, inspiring us all to go higher for God! We see how thousands were saved when Peter, Stephen, and Paul preached Yeshua from the Old Testament Scriptures (there was no New Testament during their time). The Book of Acts reiterates the truth that we need to understand the Torah!

Revelation is filled with songs in heaven(!) and judgments upon earth. It's sobering, and causes us to repent and get right with our Maker! And we see how it all ends. Revelation is good to read each month!

When to begin?

Of course one can begin any time. But having a regiment or systematic reading plan is valuable. Personally I use the Hebrew calendar for most of my Bible reading, including 30-day, 60-day, and one-year Bible-reading plans, because all the Jewish Festivals follow the Jewish calendar (Passover, Pentecost, Feast of Trumpets, Feast of Tabernacles, etc), and thus reading in sync with the Jewish calendar just makes everything so much easier to grasp and understand.

Here is the order of the Jewish months in one year:

Every month I follow both a 30-day plan, and the Torah plan that takes two months. (I also follow the Jewish practice of reading through the Torah every Shabbat in each year.)

Today is 7 January 2019, or 1 Shevat 5779. Now is a great day to begin a new cycle of 30-day and 60-day Bible reading!

► 60-day plan

We read the entire Torah over the next 60 days, plus related passages in the Prophetic Books (called Haftarah in Hebrew) and the New Testament (called Brit Chadashah in Hebrew).

It's a Jewish idea!

For the past 2,500 years the Jewish people have been using a "one-year Bible plan" to read through the entire Torah in one year. They divide the Torah into 54 weekly bite-sized portions called parashah (which means "portion" in Hebrew). One parashot is read each week in the synagogues every Shabbat (Saturday).

We use the same system, but with one difference: we read one Torah portion each day (not each week). This enables us to read through all the Torah in 54 days. We'll then take a 6-day break and start all over again for another two-month cycle. At the same time we read Psalms and Proverbs through each month.

Does this take a long time to read all this? It depends. My wife and I read out loud to each other, which takes us about 40 minutes each day. If you read to yourself it can take much less time, especially if you read quickly. But reading this amount of Scripture is really worth it! We’ve been reading systematically like this for many years, and God has blessed us so much through His Word! We can attest that because of this YHVH (our Heavenly Father) and Yeshua (His Son) have truly begun to "write the Torah" upon our hearts by the power of the Ruach HaKodesh (the Holy Spirit). We encourage you to try this, even for one month. You’ll be amazed and so very blessed, as YHVH's Torah gets inside you!

Here is Torah portion #1,“Bereshit” ("In the Beginning”) — Genesis 1:1 - 6:8

The twelve Parasha (portions of reading) for Genesis (Bereshit)

Each Torah Portion (Parashah) has a related Haftarah and Brit Chadashah portions

Torah: Genesis 1:1-6:8

Haftarah: Isaiah 42:5-43:11

Brit Chadashah: John 1:1-14; Colossians 1:15-17; Hebrews 1:1-3

As you read these scriptures, God will breathe revelation to you!

Do this each day of the month. Tomorrow on 2 Shevet read parashah #2, "Noach." When you click on "Noach" you will be taken to a similar box listing the related Haftarah and Brit Chadasha scriptures. As you do this day after day, the Bible will begin to make more and more sense to you, because you are reading it all in the light of Jewish history!

Be blessed as you read through the Torah, the Haftarah, and the Brit Chadashah, plus the Psalms and Proverbs each and every day.

If you have time, also read one chapter from the Book of Acts each month. As you do, God will reveal powerful truths to you about Yeshua the Jewish Messiah, Who fulfilled all that was written by Moses, the Prophets and in the Psalms; and Who builds up and empowers His people by the Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit) to be His spiritual Body of believers upon the earth.

If you have time, also read through the Book of Revelation each month — for we are now living in the final days, scripture is being fulfilled every day, and these things are coming to pass even now, that Yeshua and His angels revealed to Yochanan (John) the beloved disciple!

Even so, come quickly Lord Yeshua! Maranatha!

Sincerely in the name of YHVH and Yeshua,

Dr. Steve and Cassandra Kuban

PS: I often record and publish songs for each day's readings from the Scriptures. At the bottom you can click links to four songs I recorded for "Day 1."

Today’s Shabbat Torah portion from Exodus 6: “I am YHVH יהוה .”

This is one of my very favorite portions of Scripture! In essence the LORD tells Moses, “This is My proper Name: YHVH. I appeared to Abraham as “El Shaddai” (the all-sufficient One, or God Almighty), but by my name YHVH I was not known to them.”

God tells His proper name about 6,882 times in the Old Testament, using the Hebrew letters יהוה (from right to left the letters are Y (yud) H (hey) V (vav) H (hey)). Most English Bibles translate God’s name as “The LORD” (using small capital letters for the ORD), but in doing so they hide God’s proper name. Not good. The American Standard Version translates the Hebrew letters of God’s Proper name “YHVH” all 6,882 times it appears as “Jehovah” (JeHoVaH), for example:

And God spake unto Moses, and said unto him, “I am Jehovah (the letters in Hebrew are YHVH): and I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, as God Almighty; but by my name Jehovah (YHVH) I was not known to them.” (ASV)

And God spoke to Moses, and he said to him, “I am Yahweh. And I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob as God Shaddai (often translated as “Almighty”) but by my name Yahweh I was not known to them. (Lexham English Bible)

And God speaketh unto Moses, and saith unto him, ‘I [am] Jehovah, and I appear unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, as God Almighty; as to My name Jehovah, I have not been known to them; (Young’s Literal Translation)

In these chapters, YHVH tells us how it was His intention to show His might and power by delivering His chosen children (the children of Jacob, Israel) out of Egyptian bondage with His mighty outstretched hand in signs and wonders. He administered justice to the gods of Egypt, and to Pharaoh, through great plagues. What an awesome God we serve!
